Zooming Fluid States Festival

Rijeka, Croatia, 3rd - 7th September 2014

Zooming Fluid States was a festival featuring performances from across Europe, Africa, Asia, Australasia and the Pacific, which acted as a launch or 'location-zero' program for PSi #21 Fluid States: Performances of UnKnowing, and a final planning meeting for PSi#21 Fluid States: Performances of UnKnowing involving representatives from the 15 locations who will present conferences, symposia and performances throughout 2015.

A global meeting of performances cultures, artists, activists and academics open to a local public, Zooming Fluid States took place on and around the two kilometre long breakwater in Rijeka, Croatia, a location that captured the central metaphor of PSi#21 Fluid States: Performances of UnKnowing by pushing us out into the seas that connect our countries whilst providing us with a solid ground on which to encounter each other.

As a festival, symposium, intervention and happening, the Zooming Fluid States meeting tackled the question of how the complex ideas and dramaturgy at the core of a project like PSi #21 Fluid States: Performances of UnKnowing can be mediated, translated and transmitted to a general, undifferentiated and somewhat peripheral local public that mostly lacks basic information about the diversity of performance and its studies. At conventional PSi conferences, the focus is on exchange of knowledge within the academic community. This, however, gives us a limited set of tools to tackle the issues raised. At Zooming Fluid States, the focus was instead be on how correlation of artistic expression and critical reflection through workshops, spatial interventions, interactive symposia, performative exhibition and web platform could assist in presenting various manifestations of the culturally specific performances (of unknowing) to a specific local community. In this way, Zooming Fluid States festival tested the communication and collaboration potentials of the PSi #21 Fluid States: Performances of UnKnowing, providing a launching point for connections across cultures, oceans, and conceptualisations of performance as a symbolic, social, spatial, temporal and political phenomenon throughout 2015.

6 PM - 10 PM Fluid States: Performances of UnKnowing performances and instalations on the breakwater
@Lukobran (Breakwater)

Each of the locations involved in PSi#21 Fluid States: Performances of UnKnowing presented a performance, intervention or participatory interaction, presenting the culturally different genealogies of performance, politics and culture each represents within the project, and the way these performance cultures encounter new environments, new publics, and new relationships with each other.

Panama: Perfuming Panama
Greece: Radio Free Santorini
Lebanon: Waves of Existence
Philippines: Game of Patintero
Japan: The Other's Fool Parade
Bosnia and Herzegovina: Four faces of Omarska
North Atlantic: Sisters Hope
Cook Islands: Ara Moana
Bahamas: Subdivision
Australia: Circulation
The myriad different displays captured the situations in which the participants at the Fluid States locations find themselves in, as individual artists, scholars and activists, and members of their own communities and cultures. They displayed the diversity of Performance Studies international members' interests in performance in the widest possible sense of the word: performance in everyday life, activism, sports, arts, and so forth. They also captured the way performance in each of these areas has certain political connotations, as it reflects the position of the individual in relation to a particular value system and social structure. Engagement with performance at the Zooming Fluid States thus raised questions about our understandings of the social relations that reflect and refract through these various spheres of life.
